The best sushi in Evanston, and great sake, too

I tend to judge a sushi restaurant by the quality of fish and the amount of cream cheese on the menu, and Kansaku passes both tests with flying colors. (I admit, there is some cream cheese, but nothing unavoidable.)

If you’re willing to pay the prices, Kansaku will reward you with the most decorated sushi in Evanston. It’s coated in sauces and oils that give each roll a distinct flavor, and while there’s an abundance of wasabi mayo and eel sauce, the menu features some truly unique rolls. Specialty rolls are made to impress — you’ll notice chili oil, olive garlic sauce, shiso pesto sauce and citrus mustard vinagrette. (If you like your maki unslathered, stay away from the specialty rolls.)

You’ll find creative maki here, like a spicy lobster salad maki, right alongside the oh-so-trendy sweet potato tempura roll. Sashimi options include quail egg, sea urchin and oyster. One peek at the sake menu and you’ll be sampling all night.
