Red velvet cupcakes and breakfast pastries to drool over
You can almost smell Bennison’s, an instituion in Evanston and on the North Shore, before you see it. The bakery was founded in 1938 and is family owned and operated, and it specializes in holiday sweets. If it’s Purim, you’ll find excellent hamentashen. If it’s St. Patrick’s Day, expect cakes with four leaf clovers in green gel. But best of all, it tastes as enticing as it looks and smells.
They’re famous for their red velvet cupcakes, those heavenly rounds of moist, dense cake topped with a generous helping of sweet cream cheese icing that are almost too big to finish but too good to not. Bennison’s also is renowned for its Sacher torte (they need 24 hours notice to make it), but you’ll also find a melt-in-your-mouth selection of breakfast pastries, such as oozing cinnamon rolls, flakey croissants and an ever-changing selection of donuts.
All the donuts are delicious, but if you’re picky, you should know the schedule:
Monday: Cheese pąckzi
Tuesday: Cherry sour cream
Wednesday: French crullers, both glazed and chocolate iced
Thursday: Glazed pretzel donuts, old fashioned sour cream donuts
Friday: Glazed chocolate cake donuts, chocolate iced chocolate cake donuts
