Walking into a Vosges is like walking into a trendy Chicago clothing boutique. The decor is impeccable and geared toward females (the owner/chocolatier is female and the business is certified through the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council); just swap chocolate in for frocks.

The chocolates are almost too perfect and pretty to think of eating, but it’s hard to resist when you read the flavors and exotic spices involved, such as flowers, roots and salts from around the world specially flown in to Chicago. Mix and match specialty truffles or pick up a bacon candy bar, but good luck deciding on just one — or even a couple — chocolates you want. Just graze on small pieces of chocolates left in bowls on the counter while deliberating, because there’s no skimping on samples here. Some of my favorite chocolates (so far) include the balsalmico truffle — dark chocolate and aged balsalmico vinegar, a delicious tang — the Creole bar with its New Orleans style chicory coffee flavor and the organic peanut butter bonbon bar, which is unbelievably creamy.
