El Corte Inglés

The mother of all department stores

In Barcelona, El Corte Inglés was the saving grace for us study abroad kids. CVS and Target-like stores are essentially non-existent in the city, but El Corte Inglés had it all. We purchased minutes for our cell phones here, I picked up a European hair straightner and designer bag at El Corte, found espresso cups and saucers with hand-painted scenes of the city for my parents, and it’s one of the few places in the city that sells jars of peanut butter. The massive combination department store-grocery store-discount superstore is located centrally on the edge of Plaza Catalunya and is always packed, no matter when you go. Strolling the multiple floors is almost like an anthropological study of the city; right in front of you is every type of Barcelonan and everything they could ever want or need to buy.
